Book Review: Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore β˜…

β€œBecause, my lord, if the marchioness believes that the female brain is incapable of forming a sound analysis on political issues, why should anyone trust her analysis on women in politics?”

I’ll be honest, I didn’t really know how I’d feel about this one going into it. But hey, it was available at the library and SO MANY people seem to love it so, why not? HAHAHAHA

I’m sorry, but, it was really quite terrible. 1.5 stars 😬.

Book Review: The Marriage Game by Sara Desai β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

“Don’t bother unpacking the rest,” she said, tearing the lease in half. “I’m kicking you out now.”

She was almost as strong willed and stubborn as he was. But he had much better taste in furniture.

He snorted a laugh. “I’d like to see you try.”

“I’m sure you would,” she snapped. “It’s probably the only way you can get a woman near you with that giant ego in the way.”

“I’m hardly lacking for female companionship.”

Layla rolled her eyes in an overly dramatic fashion. “I’m not interested in hearing about your visits to the nail bar. I just want you gone.”

“It’s not going to happen, sweetheart. I have the document in digital form, and the law on my side.”

Number one, I love this cover. It’s gorgeous. (Although…the blank face cartoon trend is not my favorite. Poor Layla looks terrible there πŸ˜…). Number two, this was really freaking cute. Four stars, yes let’s give it up for well written rom-coms!!!

Book Review: The Bookish Life of Nina Hill by Abbi Waxman β˜…β˜…

β€œNina had looked around and realized she would never run out of things to read, and that certainty filled her with peace and satisfaction. It didn’t matter what hit the fan; as long as there were unread books in the world, she would be fine.”

This book was a huge disappointment. On paper, it sounded really fun and relatable, something cute and easy to fly through. Unfortunately, though, it was none of those things. Instead, it was cliche, boring, lacking, cringey, and very disappointing. I kind of want to give it 1.5 star now, but my initial gut reaction was 2 stars.

Book Review: Don’t You Forget About Me by Mhairi McFarlane β˜…β˜…β˜…

β€œWhat I was wondering is, if you too hope we have one of those first dates that turns into days and nights…because we can’t stand to be apart.”

This was an interesting read for me. I went in with set expectations and was taken aback when the book turned out to be quite different. I had some qualms with it, but overall, the parts I liked won out and I gave this book 3.5 stars.

Book Review: The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

β€œDon’t you see? Hope is a good thingβ€”a wonderful thingβ€”but you must have hope in something appropriate. If you perpetuate the dreams of the past, then you stifle your own dreams of the future.”

If I want to get picky, this was 4.25 stars! This series is so good; I just knew it would get better and better with each installment.

Book Review: The Martian by Andy Weir β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

β€œβ€œHe’s stuck out there. He thinks he’s totally alone and that we all gave up on him. What kind of effect does that have on a man’s psychology?” He turned back to Venkat. β€œI wonder what he’s thinking right now.”

LOG ENTRY: SOL 61 “How come Aquaman can control whales? They’re mammals! Makes no sense.””

Ok this book was so good! Why have I been sleeping on it this whole time?? For some reason I didn’t expect it to be as engaging and fast-paced as it was. I thought I’d like it, but not really like it. I’m glad I was wrong!

Book Review: The Final Empire by Brandon Sanderson β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

The Final Empire

β€œI never wanted to be feared. If I regret one thing, it is the fear I have caused. Fear is the tool of tyrants. Unfortunately, when the fate of the world is in question, you use whatever tools are available.”

I cannot get over how beautiful the UK covers are for this series!!! SO much better than the US ones.

This was a great book and a fantastic start to a series! It was a little slow-going for me in the beginning and it took me a while to really connect with the characters, but once I did, I really loved it.

Book Review: The Pisces by Melissa Broder β˜…β˜…β˜…

β€œYes, it certainly seemed like the human instinct, to get high on someone else, an external entity who could make life more exciting and relieve you of your own self, your own life, even just for a moment. Maybe once that person became too real, too familiar, they could no longer get you high – no longer be a drug – and that was why you grew tired of them.”

This book was so bizarre. For some reason, I have been drawn to the cover and the concept of it since it came out and when I heard that Whitney from WittyNovels on Youtube liked it, I decided to give it a try.

I actually really enjoyed a lot of what I read here (in a disturbing, introspective kind of way). The writing is fantastic, the story and the characters very unapologetic. And it is truly out there. I wanted to give it 4 stars for most of the book, but somewhere near the ending, I settled on 3.5 stars, overall.

Book Review: The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren β˜…β˜…β˜…

β€œI like the idea of saving to buy a place of my own or having some extra in the bank for an adventure once I figure out what kind of adventure I want to have. I see all these choices unrolling in front of me – career, travel, friends, geography – and despite things being insane and hard and messy, I don’t think I’ve ever liked myself more than I do now. It’s the strangest feeling to be proud simply because I’m taking care of me and mine. Is this what it’s like to grow up?”

This book was a ton of fun. I am generally new to the whole romance genre, because they so often seem cringey and shallow to me, but damn it I was in the mood for a rom-com! (Yay for expanding our reading tastes and getting out of our comfort zones!!) I had been interested in trying out a Christina Lauren book for a while and I am really glad I did! I gave this one 3.5 stars.
