Book Review: The Library of the Unwritten by A.J. Hackwith ★★★

The trouble with reading is it goes to your head. Read too many books and you get savvy. You begin to think you know which kind of story you’re in. Then some stupid git with a cosmic quill fucks you over.

I definitely enjoyed this book! I think I’ve decided to give it 3.5 stars overall. The concept was very cool and I had been excited to read it ever since hearing about it a year ago. Ultimately, the concept was a bit more successful for me than the actual execution was, but I did still like it. If you’re looking for a “book about books” or a “book written for book lovers” or “a book about a magical library,” forget A Sorcery of Thorns and read this instead. It is a billion times better.

“Sometimes it feels easier to just be the way I was before you. Safer. But…look what you’ve been able to do. How brave you’ve been. And that’s how I want to be.”

Ok, so I never really learn my lesson with the hype. I get caught up in it; sue me. I heard about this book and it’s ridiculous premise and I figured I would not like it (I was right). Howeverrrrr, I heard a lot of people loved it and then it was available at my library and I was curious ok?!? I wanted to see if I’d like it (I didn’t). 2.5 stars.

“I need you in my life like I need to fly. Like I need this Alaskan air. More than I need this air.”

Oh man, this series. These characters. This writing. This author.

Gushinggggg but it’s so good.

This sequel didn’t quite contain the magic that the first book did for me, but it was very well done, nonetheless. I really appreciate what the author did with the story and how she handled the continuation. 4.25 stars if we wanna be precise 😉.

He’s stuck out there. He thinks he’s totally alone and that we all gave up on him. What kind of effect does that have on a man’s psychology?” He turned back to Venkat. “I wonder what he’s thinking right now.”

LOG ENTRY: SOL 61 “How come Aquaman can control whales? They’re mammals! Makes no sense.””

Ok this book was so good! Why have I been sleeping on it this whole time?? For some reason I didn’t expect it to be as engaging and fast-paced as it was. I thought I’d like it, but not really like it. I’m glad I was wrong!

Book Review: The Secret History by Donna Tartt ★★★★★

“Why does that obstinate little voice in our heads torment us so? Could it be because it reminds us that we are alive, of our mortality, of our individual souls – which, after all, we are too afraid to surrender but yet make us feel more miserable than any other thing? It is a terrible thing to learn as a child that one is a being separate from the world, that no one and no thing hurts along with one’s burned tongues and skinned knees, that one’s aches and pains are all one’s own. Even more terrible, as we grow older, to learn that no person, no matter how beloved, can ever truly understand us. Our own selves make us most unhappy, and that’s why we’re so anxious to lose them, don’t you think?”

Wow wow wow! This book was absolutely amazing. I loved everything about it. 5 stars!!

Book Review: A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab ★★★★

“”Aren’t you afraid of dying?” he asked Lila now.
She looked at him as if it were a strange question. And then she shook her head. “Death comes for everyone,” she said simply. “I’m not afraid of dying. But I am afraid of dying here.” She swept her hand over the room, the tavern, the city. “I’d rather die on an adventure than live standing still.””
