When you dance with the Rite of Dreaming, you dance with the gods.

3.5 stars. I enjoyed this book and the first half was great. The second half left a bit to be desired, buuut I liked it overall and will read the companion novel.

Book Review: Godsgrave by Jay Kristoff ★★★

“My father used to say the art of telling a good story lies in knowing when to stop. Keep talking long enough, you’ll find there’s no such thing as a happy ending.”

Welp. I tried the second book in hopes that it would be amazing and that this series would become a new favorite of mine. Instead, it was a run of the mill middle book, entertaining enough, but kind of boring. A bit of filler. I found this one even less compelling than the first novel, unfortunately 😭. 3 stars.

Book Review: Nevernight by Jay Kristoff ★★★

“You’ll be a rumor. A whisper. The thought that wakes the bastards of this world sweating in the nevernight. The last thing you will ever be, girl, is someone’s hero.”

Wanting the UK hardcovers of this series is causing me such grief. They are so much prettier than the US covers altogether, so much nicer than the UK paperbacks. And. They. Are. Not. Available. Anymore. Ughhhh!!

I figured, though, before I potentially spent an arm and a leg on my favorite editions of this series, I should give it a try and see if it was actually worth all of my money. And honestly??? I don’t know yet. I just finished Nevernight and it took me WAY longer to read than I thought it would and I liked it far less than I expected. Which is a complete bummer, because I thought I would find a new all-time favorite series here. Ultimately, I gave it 3.5 stars. *Spoilers*

Book Review: An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard ★★

“Magic, at its heart, starts with sacrifice. You have to give up something to get something, and because magic is big, with all that it allows you access to, what you give up has to be big. It has to be meaningful.”

So ultimately, I am really disappointed in this book. I requested this one from my library and I have heard a lot of good things about it, so I was really excited when it finally came in and I could get my hands on it. I had heard people call this one “adult Harry Potter” and it was (originally) a stand-alone. All things I was very interested in! However, it just fell very flat for me in the end😕😕

Book Review: Black Leopard Red Wolf by Marlon James ★★★★

“We don’t own truth. Truth is truth and nothing you can do about it even if you hide it, or kill it, or even tell it. It was truth before you open your mouth and say, That there is a true thing.”

I am not one to usually give trigger warnings, because honestly I just forget to and generally mention it in my review anyway, but for this book:

Trigger warnings: LITERALLY ALL OF THEM. Yes, even that one. And that one! Oh you thought that would never be allowed in a book?? Well it’s in here!

Sooo I’m gonna be honest with you guys. I really liked this book. A lot! But, I would definitely hesitate before recommending it to anyone I know in real life 😅. It is SO DARK. I am having such a hard time rating it, too. The story and the writing and the characterization – all phenomenal. But some of the subject matter is wildly violent and disturbing…..Yeahhhh, I’m still gonna go 4.5 stars, I think. It was really good, okay! Don’t @ me!
