I am very sorry that I’ve been AWOL for so long! Things have been crazy, but they are finally settling down. Hopefully Hurricane Maria leaves us alone! For now, I’m back with a tag I read over at The Nameless Book Blog and thought would be pretty fun. So, do I dare?? (Sidenote: that’s also a literary quote tattoo I have. Can you guess from where? 😉 )
1. Which book has been on your shelf the longest?
I have a super old, beat up copy of Black Beauty that has probably been there the longest. I have rearranged and moved bookshelves a bunch, but that one was there way back when, too.
2. Which is your current read, your last read and your next read?
I am currently reading Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee, I last read Tower of Dawn, and next I think I am going to read Heart of Mist by Helen Scheuerer, which I just discovered yesterday, but really like the sound of!
3. What book did everyone like, but you hated?
The Grisha Trilogy. There are quite a few books I could choose for this (you know me haha), but The Grisha Trilogy is like unanimously loved, I just hated it. Like screw Mal, amiright?
4. What book do you keep telling yourself to read, but probably won’t?
The Canterbury Tales and Don Quixote. Maybe one day ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
5. Which books are you saving for retirement?
War and Peace, Ulysses, the rest of Shakespeare, most of my collections of poetry….
6. Last page: read it first, or wait till the end?
Wait till the end! What am I, a heathen?!
7. Acknowledgments: waste of paper and ink, or interesting aside?
Depends on the book/author. I do not always read them, but I like to know they are there if I want to. And some I love to read.
8. Which character would you switch places with?
Nesta Archeron. She has had such a difficult life, but is so strong and resilient. She intimidates people, speaks her mind, and has no qualms about what others think. I wish I was more like her sometimes, sharp tongue and all. Also, there’s Cassian, so duh.
9. Do you have a book that reminds you of a certain moment in your life? (a person, place, time etc.)
Fight Club reminds me of my first year away in college. I had read it previously, but I bonded with someone over the book and even let them borrow it (a rare thing, mind you). It was nice to connect with a random person from a party who had nothing in common with me except reading.
10. Name a book that you acquired in an interesting way?
Most of my books were acquired in decidedly non-interesting ways, but I do have a sweet old box-set of Lord of the Rings that I found in a dusty old corner of an antique shop. The shop was like 3 stories and packed full of cool junk/treasures. The LOTR box-set was wedged under an old vanity with cookbooks piled around it. I saw “Fellowship” out of the corner of my eye and was like hold up! I uncovered it, gushed over the cool cover, and immediately rescued it.
11. Have you ever given away a book for a special reason to a special person?
Not my own copy of the book, but I bought a copy of A Court of Thorns and Roses for my mom for Mother’s Day. I knew she’d like it is she read it, but she wouldn’t borrow my copy, because it was a hardcover and she is particular about needing paperbacks (something about them hurting her nose if she falls asleep reading…who knows 😉 ). So, I bought her a paperback copy back on Mother’s Day and now she is currently halfway through ACOWAR and loving it!!
12. Which book has been with you to the most places?
My personal quote book where I record all of my favorite quotes. I have had it on hand at all times since middle school, so it has been with me the most.
13. Any ”required reading” you hated in school that wasn’t so bad a few years later?
I never hated any of the required reading once I was in high school, even if they were a tad stale and all of my classmates hated them (ahem Great Expectations, anyone?). However! I positively hated the Tale of Despereaux and the Phantom Tollbooth. And I haven’t read them again.
14. Used or brand new?
Depends on the book/series. Older books I tend to like used, because the aesthetic and potential margin notes are perfection. More recent books or series that I want to collect, I prefer new and pristine.
15. Have you ever read a Dan Brown book?
Yes, and I loved the DaVinci Code! I find his other books entertaining, too. This is such a random question haha.
16. Have you ever seen a movie that you liked more than the book?
The Phantom of the Opera with Emmy Rossum and Gerard Butler. I think it came out in 2004 or ’05?? It is spectacular and you should definitely check it out, if you haven’t already. It is my favorite version of the songs. And, while I did enjoy the book, being able to see and hear the story in front of me is so much better in this case.
17. Have you ever read a book that made you hungry? Cookbooks excluded.
Any high fantasy book that talks about mutton or mead, salted meat, pheasant, or turkey legs hahaha!! I have a strange desire to eat like medieval people sometimes. Thank god for Ren Fest.
18. Who is the person whose book advice you’ll always take?
I never really took anyone’s book advice when I was younger; I just found lists on Amazon (what happened to Listmania ??) about similar books and I read reviews. One of my best friends has similar taste, so I can usually trust her advice…Maybe Rory Gilmore’s and Jess Mariano’s advice haha?? Nowadays, I just read what appeals to me at the time.
